"I 100% agree with the choice and the sentiment of the blurb about it, but re: "Royals," I feel like the racial arguments are based on a really flawed and much more damning and racist premise than the song itself, which is the notion that materialism, disengagement, and living a falsely lavish lifestyle are indicative of "black culture." There are so many problems with that idea it’s impossible to take it seriously. First, not all hip-hop culture is based on negative stereotypes. Second, not all hip-hop is strictly indicative of black culture. Third, not all black people identify with themes in popular hip-hop music. Fourth, hip-hop is not an exclusively black genre of music. So this idea that by highlighting the problematic nature of some popular music the song is a critique of black culture and is thus racist is more of a racist notion than anything else."
